Keeping my skin hydrated is a priority, particularly in winter. Saskatchewan winters are a dry kind of cold, the kind of cold that leaves skin chapped, dry, and prone to cracking. While dressing warmly helps, I also keep an ample supply of lotions around to keep my skin healthy, happy, and hydrated until spring. Here are some of the best moisturizers to help combat the damaging effects of the cold:
For my face:
Fresh Umbrian Clay Mattifying Serum: I won’t post too much on this because it appeared on my list of 2017 Favourites. However, I will mention that this serum is fantastic for oily skin, providing just enough moisture without creating excess.
Origins Perfect World Age-Defying Serum: For days when my cheeks need a little extra quench and protection, I reach for this serum. It absorbs quickly and provides a lot of moisture to my skin, so much that I can only use it in winter else I increase my chances of a breakout.
Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Gel Cream: Phew, that was a long name. I received a sample of this as part of a Birthday Gift from Sephora, and I fell in love with it. One of the rare facial moisturizers that absorbs so completely into the skin, leaving no tacky residue behind, but offers real hydration for my skin.
Naked Kitty Supernatural Moisturizer: It really helps to be friends with a classy dame who makes her own line of natural skincare products. I was fortunate to be a guinea pig for Supernatural, and I recently found what was left of my tub during a make-up decluttering. It’s such a gentle moisturizer for the face, providing moisture without, again, leaving behind a tackiness. The light scent isn’t cloying or overpowering. And it’s so soothing on my sensitive skin.
Lush Cosmetic Lad: An oldie but a goodie in my skincare regimen. I first got a sample of this from Lush almost ten years ago, and I’ve owned tubs of it on and off since then. Cosmetic Lad has everything I want in a moisturizer, being gentle, fast-absorbing, but offering real hydration. I recently picked up a tub to combat some scaliness on my face (antibiotics simply ravaged me. Hmmm…a lifestyle post for the future, perhaps?). This saved my skin when everything else burned to apply.
For the hands:
Lush Dream Cream: One of my favourites from Lush, Dream Cream has a light scent and is lusciously hydrating. The formula features such fantastic ingredients as cocoa butter, tea tree oil, and lavender oil. A little bit goes a long way with this one. I find it’s easy to overdo it and end up with greasy hands, but applying this once or twice a day keeps my hands feeling supple and smooth.
Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion (Fragrance Free): Not exactly the most natural formula, but Aveeno’s Skin Relief lotion is gentle for my sensitive skin and absorbs quickly. What’s more is that no other lotion on this list competes with its availability. For someone so obsessed with their hand creams, you would think I could remember mine when I travel. Alas, I often forget, and end up at the drugstore buying a travel-sized bottle of Aveeno to tide me over till I’m back home.
Burt’s Bees Richly Replenishing Body Lotion: Another readily accessible lotion, and one boasting natural ingredients. I picked this up while traveling as a standby and did not regret it. The formula absorbs quickly and, unlike some of my other interim lotions, this one didn’t foster a dependency.
Naked Kitty Body Butter: Again, so lucky to know a maker. Scents and perfumes in lotion tend to be drying on my hands, so I tend to gravitate towards unscented products. I make an exception for these body butters. I have Vanilla Mint in my purse and Lavender Lemon by my bed and I adore them both. Wonderfully hydrating and fast absorbing, these butters leave my skin feeling lovely for hours.
Body Shop Hemp Hard-Working Hand Protector: My brother worked construction one summer, and he kept tubes of this around to soothe his hands after hard labour. Good thing he had back-up; I definitely stole one of this. This cream doesn’t absorb so quickly, but I make an exception and keep it for use before bed. It helps when my hands need some serious hydration.
For the rest of me:
Naked Kitty Naked Lotion: I put this on my list of 2017 Favourites because I love this stuff. I’ve used up three tubs of it in the past couple of months, particularly around my ankles where winter seems to bite the hardest. This is the first lotion that’s actually helped ease some of the itchiness on my calves.
I intend to do a long post about nail care that will make mention of my favourite nail oil, but I think this covers some products that I rely on to keep my skin happy. Hope this helps you stay hydrated during these long winter months!
