As a precursor to reviews of individual products (wind up aside!), we thought it would be best if Sarah and I both wrote beauty profiles to give our readers a better sense of how we form our opinions about products. Let us know in the comments if you think we should add anything!
Skin tone: Medium? I’m biologically Iranian, but I’m not super dark / “pass for white”. So in Urban Decay foundation, I’m a 3.5.
Eye Colour: Brown
Eyebrow situation: Thankfully, my mom didn’t let me pluck them to tiny lines. They’re fully intact, also black, and I do not have to pencil them in!
Hair colour / type: Black, thick, and wavy.
Make-up comfort level: on a scale of 1-5, I’d say a 3 (always learning!). I like to take my time applying make-up, so if I’m going out or somewhere special, I’ll bring my coffee into the bathroom with me and spend a solid hour prepping. And I prime all the things.
Approximate number of products used per day (including skincare): depends on the day, but about 1-4 items of make-up (mascara, eyeliner, concealer, lipstick), 3-5 skincare items (scrub, mask (I don’t scrub / mask every day), cleanser, toner, moisturizer). So in total, 4-9 items. More if I’m going to take an hour to get ready.
Describe your make-up philosophy: Generally a minimalist, somewhat picky (okay, I’m very picky but will try lots of things). I read the ingredients on everything, partially because I make my own natural products and I’m genuinely curious, and partitally because if it has coconut oil or a coconut oil derivative, I will run in the other direction (see:Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride…it’s just fractionated and will suck the life out of your skin).
Lately, I’ve found it cathartic to take my time applying make-up, including busting out my Naked Heat palette. And maybe I’ve seriously considered using my Sugarpill Burning Heart palette that’s gathering dust (I’m slow to take action in this department). On a regular day: zero time, mascara, eyeliner, go. If I look like I spent an hour on my face every day, I’d be setting the bar high.
Colours: Generally love them, but I’m so not adventurous. Although, once I did wear Poison Plum from the Sugarpill Burning Heart Palette to a job interview (LOUD PURPLE), of course, mixed in with some neutrals…and a cobalt blue blazer. I didn’t really want the job. I also didn’t get a job offer, haha. I have my loud moments. So mostly neutrals. Or neutral, neutral, pop of colour.
When you love/hate products: I will be their biggest salesperson. I’m not a good sales person, but when I love something (or hate it) I will advocate hard for / against it. You should hear me talk about my Shiseido sunscreen. Or how much I can’t stand coconut oil hype.
Hopefully this helps anyone reading this blog to understand how I choose products.
